sitting.

Almost overnight, Mattias sits. What is it about sitting that makes a baby seem so old? I guess it's the stark contrast to the newborn days. When their bodies are all squish and bend. When they can't hold up their head, never mind their whole upper body. And then, suddenly, they do. They sit with enviable posture and curled toes. It's like they are seeing the world in a whole new way, which is, in fact, what is happening, and they are a million times happier for it.

Bravo, my sweet boy.

happy friday.

Have a good weekend, friends. I'm looking forward to ours, especially since we're kicking it off right with a date night tonight.

You can find me over at my friend Adelle's blog today.

siblings.

Yesterday I was cleaning the kitchen and things got quiet. Most mothers know this means something terrible has happened. Glitter, powder, sand, flour. Usually something messy and something very hard to clean up. I rushed around the corner into the living room to see only sweetness. Meredith and Mattias playing together. Only a few seconds later, the silence was broken by the sound of baby laughter.

Already Mattias adores his sister, gazing lovingly at her from his car seat. Meredith adores her brother, looking for him as soon as she wakes for the day or from a nap. Of course, it's not always perfect. She can be too rough and he already fights back with hair pulling, but it melts my heart to see the love they have for one another.

our weekend.

This weekend was needed. We started off exhausted. Physically from the care and keeping of two little people and emotionally from all the news in Boston. But,we were also craving adventure and fun family memories. Saturday was low-key. It was marked by sweet moments with the kids and those moments of irritation with your spouse that occur when you are both tired and lacking the grace necessary for the relationship to run smoothly. We ended the day with dinner with friends and while I wasn't sure I had the energy to do it, I am so glad we did. It was one of those nights when I barely held the baby and Meredith was entertained with a swimming pool and kindhearted older kids. While the kids were cared for, we too were cared for in the form of frozen margaritas and adult conversation. We left refreshed.

Sunday started with the weekly scramble and stress of getting out the door for church and wrapped up with a perfect family outing to San Francisco. We stopped at Bernal Heights Park, wandered around the Mission, ate dinner at Puerto Alegre, strolled to Delores Park and ended the night as every night should end, with ice cream from Bi-Rite. Of course, by the time our car rolled into the driveway, much past the kids' bedtime, we were all four exhausted. But not in the way we started the weekend. We were exhausted from stretching our legs, giving hugs and cuddles and taking in the sights and sounds of a city we've come to love.

Spunk.

Meredith,

Today was a good day. In some moments you make me crazy, but mostly I marvel at you and the little girl you've become.

XO,
Mama

Saturday.

Most Friday nights, Chris and I look at each other and one of us says, "What should we do tomorrow?" Usually the other responds with, "I don't know. I'm up for anything." Almost always we leave it that we'll either go to the beach or San Francisco. It's a hard life we live here in the Bay Area. On Saturday morning, we still couldn't decide so we left it up to Meredith.

"I want to go downtown!" she declared. "And ride the train!"

Well, our plan was set. We scrambled to get ready and rushed to catch the next Caltrain. We enjoyed a fun train ride up to the city and then strolled the mile and a half up to the Ferry Building. We ran around AT&T park, watched the runners and enjoyed views of the bay as we walked. I had my heart set on a donut, since I dropped my bagel getting onto the train. We promptly found the donut spot and then walked out to the Embarcadero to people watch. The donuts were only ok, but the people watching was prime. Kids doing tricks on their bikes, a man playing music on his plastic tub/metal pots drums set and lots of tourists taking pictures.

Soon we headed back towards the train station, planning on a stop at the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen for lunch. The food didn't disappoint. Soon, exhausted, we were headed home on the train, thankful to live so close to such a fun place.
